About Sri Suktam

Sri Suktam is a sacred hymn found in the Rigveda, one of the oldest texts in Hinduism. It is composed in Sanskrit and is dedicated to the goddess Sri or Lakshmi, who represents wealth, prosperity, and divine grace. The Sri Suktam hymn is often recited or chanted by devotees as a means of seeking blessings and invoking the goddess's benevolence.

Each verse of the Sri Suktam highlights different attributes of Goddess Lakshmi and the blessings she bestows upon her devotees. It begins with an invocation to the goddess and describes her as the source of all wealth and abundance. The hymn goes on to portray Sri as the embodiment of beauty, radiance, and fertility.   • हिरण्यवर्णामिति पंचदशर्चस्य सूक्तस्य
    आनंदकर्दमश्रीद चिक्लीतॆंदिरा सुता ऋषयः ।
    आद्यास्तिस्रॊऽनुष्टुभः । चतुर्थी बृहती ।
    पंचमी षष्ठ्यौ त्रिष्टुभौ । ततॊऽष्टावनुष्टुभः ।
    अंत्या प्रस्तारपंक्तिः । श्रीर्दॆवता ॥

    hiranyavarnaamiti panchadasharchasya suktasya
    aanandakardamashreeda chikleetendiraa sutaa rushayaH |
    aadyaastisronushtubhaH | chaturthi bruhati |
    panchami shashthyou trishtubhou | tatoshtaavanushtubhaH |
    antyaa prastaarapanktiH | shreerdevataa ||

    This is the hymn of fifteen verses, known as 'Hiranyavarnaam.' Its recitation brings immense joy and divine blessings. The first, third, and eighth verses are in the Anushtubh meter. The fourth verse is in the Bruhati meter. The fifth and sixth verses are in the Trishtubh meter. The final verse is in the Prastaara Pankti meter. The deity invoked in this hymn is Goddess Sri (Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity).

  • ॐ ॥ हिरण्यवर्णां हरिणीं सुवर्णरजतस्रजाम्‌ ।
    चंद्रां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवॆदॊ म आवह ॥ १ ॥

    O Lord Agni, I invoke the golden-hued, deer-like, adorned with gold and silver garlands, the one who shines like the moon, the golden-hued Goddess Lakshmi. May the Goddess Lakshmi grace me with her blessings

  • तां म आवह जातवॆदॊ लक्ष्मीमनपगामिनी"म्‌ ।
    यस्यां हिरण्यं विंदॆयं गामश्वं पुरुषानहम्‌ ॥ २ ॥

    taam ma aavaha jaatavedo lakshmimanapagaaminem |
    yasyaam hiranyam vindeyam gaamashvam purushaanaham || 2 ||

    O Lord Agni, bestow upon me Goddess Lakshmi who never leaves.I may get gold, cows, horses, and servants, If she is pleased.

  • अश्वपूर्वां रथमध्यां हस्तिना"दप्रबॊधिनीम्‌ ।
    श्रियं दॆवीमुपह्वयॆ श्रीर्मा" दॆवीजुषताम्‌ ॥ ३ ॥

    ashvapurvaam rathamadhyaam hastinaadaprabodhinim |
    shriyam devimupahvaye shreermaa devijushataam || 3 ||

    I invoke Sri Devi who has a horse in front, a chariot in the middle, who is pleased with the sound of an elephant, by whose radiance illuminates and blesses all. may that glorious Shri goddess be pleased with us

  • कां सॊस्मितां हिरण्यप्राकारामार्द्रां ज्वलंतीं तृप्तां तर्पयंतीम्‌ ।
    पद्मॆ स्थितां पद्मवर्णां तामिहॊपह्वयॆ श्रियम्‌ ॥ ४ ॥

    kaam sosmitaam hiranyapraakaaraamaardraam jvalanteem truptaam tarpayantim |
    padme sthitaam padmavarnaam taamihopahvaye shriyam || 4 ||

    I invoke the auspicious goddess Shri, who possesses a captivating smile, resplendent like the golden hue, radiating with contentment, who is eternally satisfied and who fulfills the desires of devotees, is seated on a lotus, and has the colour of the lotus.

  • चंद्रां प्रभासां यशसा ज्वलंतीं श्रियं लॊकॆ दॆवजुष्टामुदाराम्‌ ।
    तां पद्मिनीमीं शरणमहं प्रपद्यॆऽलक्ष्मीर्मॆ नश्यतां त्वां वृणॆ ॥ ५ ॥

    chandraam prabhaasaam yashasaa jvalantim shriyam loke devajushtaamudaaraam |
    taam padminimeem sharanamaham prapadyelakshmirme nashyataam tvaam vrune || 5 ||

    I take refuge in Sri Devi who shines like the moon, shines with glory, is worshiped by the devas, gives boons to the devotees, and adorns herself like a lotus. May Alakshmi (poverty) be destroyed from me by her grace.

  • आदित्यवर्णॆ तपसॊऽधिजातॊ वनस्पतिस्तव वृक्षॊऽथ बिल्वः ।
    तस्य फला"नि तपसा नुदंतु मायांतरायाश्च बाह्या अलक्ष्मीः ॥ ६ ॥

    Adityavarne tapasodhijaato vanaspatistava vrukshotha bilvaH |
    tasya phalaani tapasaa nudantu maayaantaraayaashca baahyaa alakshmiH || 6 ||

    O Shri Devi, who shines like the sun, just as your penance produces the bilva tree which bears fruit without flowers, so may its fruits remove all my internal and external alakshmi doshas.

    Inner Alakshmi Doshas – Ignorance, Lust, Anger, Lobha, Moha, Mada, Matsara.

    External alakshmi doshas - poverty, laziness.

  • उपैतु मां दॆवसखः कीर्तिश्च मणिना सह ।
    प्रादुर्भूतॊऽस्मि राष्ट्रॆऽस्मिन्‌ कीर्तिमृद्धिं ददातु मॆ ॥ ७ ॥

    upaitu maam devasakhaH keertishcha maninaa saha |
    praadurbhootosmi raashtresmin kIrtimruddhim dadaatu me || 7 ||

    May Kubera and Kirti, friends of the gods, come near me with their wealth and jewels. Also, May I get success and prosperity all over the country.

  • क्षुत्पिपासामलां ज्यॆष्ठामलक्ष्मीं नाशयाम्यहम्‌ ।
    अभूतिमसमृद्धिं च सर्वां निर्णुद मॆ गृहात्‌ ॥ ८ ॥

    kshutpipaasaamalaam jyeshthaamalakshmim naashayaamyaham |
    abhootimasamruddhim cha sarvaam nirnuda me gruhaat || 8 ||

    Only with her help can one get rid of the poverty and misfortune caused by her sister Alakshmi's forms of hunger, thirst, and other defilements.

  • गंधद्वारां दुराधर्षां नित्यपुष्पां करीषिणी"म्‌ ।
    ईश्वरी"‌ं सर्वभूतानां तामिहॊपह्वयॆ श्रियम्‌ ॥ ९ ॥

    gandhadvaaraam duraadharshaam nityapushpaam kareeshinim |
    Ishvarim sarvabhootaanaam taamihopahvaye shriyam || 9 ||

    I invoke Sri Devi, who is the source of fragrance, who cannot be shaken by anyone, who is always full of wealth, grain, and plants, who has the essence necessary for the nourishment of plants, and the ruler of all living beings.

  • मनसः काममाकू"तिं वाचः सत्यमशीमहि ।
    पशूनां रूपमन्नस्य मयि श्रीः श्रयतां यशः ॥ १० ॥

    manasaH kaamamaakootim vaachaH satyamashImahi |
    pashoonaam roopamannasya mayi shriH shrayataam yashaH || 10 ||

    Be it the desire of the mind, the truthfulness of speech, the purpose of life is the grace of Goddess Lakshmi. May wealth in the form of animals, in the form of fame, and in the form of glory reside in me by her grace.

  • कर्दमॆन प्रजाभूता मयि संभव कर्दम ।
    श्रियं वासय मॆ कुलॆ मातरं पद्ममालिनीम्‌ ॥ ११ ॥

    kardamena prajaabhootaa mayi sambhava kardama |
    shriyam vaasaya me kule maataram padmamaalineem || 11 ||

    O Kardama Muni, please be present in me. Through you make Sri Devi who is garlanded with lotus flowers reside in my family.

  • आपः सृजंतु स्निग्धानि चिक्लीत वस मॆ गृहॆ ।
    नि च दॆवीं मातरं श्रियं वासय मॆ कुलॆ ॥ १२ ॥

    aapaH srujantu snigdhaani chikleeta vasa me gruhe |
    ni cha devim maataram shriyam vaasaya me kule || 12 ||

    O Chikleeta Rishi (another son of Lakshmi), how the presence of the water-gods creates a friendly atmosphere, just like that stay with me. Make Sri Devi reside in my family through You.

  • आर्द्रां पुष्करिणीं पुष्टिं पिंगलां पद्ममालिनीम्‌ ।
    चंद्रां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवॆदॊ म आवह ॥ १३ ॥

    aardraam pushkarineem pushtim pingalaam padmamaalinim |
    chandraam hiranmayim lakshmim jaatavedo ma aavaha || 13 ||

    O Agni, invoke for me Lakshmi, who is kind like the water in a lotus pond, nurturing, abundant, garlanded with lotuses, shining like the moon, adorned with gold.

  • आर्द्रां यः करिणीं यष्टिं सुवर्णां हॆममालिनीम्‌ ।
    सूर्यां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवॆदॊ म आवह ॥ १४ ॥

    aardraam yaH karineem yashtim suvarnaam hemamaalineem |
    suryaam hiranmayeem lakshmim jaatavedo ma aavaha || 14 ||

    O Agni, I invoke Goddess Lakshmi, who is benevolent, wish-fulfilling, adorned with gold, shining like the sun, and golden-hued.

  • तां म आवह जातवॆदॊ लक्ष्मीमनपगामिनी"म्‌ ।
    यस्यां हिरण्यं प्रभूतं गावॊ दास्यॊऽश्वान्, विंदॆयं पुरुषानहम्‌ ॥ १५ ॥

    taam ma aavaha jaatavedo lakshmimanapagaamineem |
    yasyaam hiranyam prabhutam gaavo daasyoshvaan, vindeyam purushaanaham || 15 ||

    O Agni, who does not go away and who when pleased I obtain abundant gold, cows, maids, horses, and servants, invoke for me such steadfast Lakshmi.

    यः शुचिः प्रयतॊ भूत्वा जुहुया"दाज्य मन्वहम्‌ ।
    श्रियः पंचदशर्चं च श्रीकामस्सततं जपॆत्‌ ॥ १ ॥

    yaH shuchih prayato bhutvaa juhuyaadaajya manvaham |
    shriyaH panchadasharcham cha shrikaamassatatam japet || 1 ||

    Whoever desires wealth should be pure and diligent, offer oblations with ghee in the holy fire, and recite these fifteen hymns dedicated to Sri (Goddess Lakshmi).

  • पद्माननॆ पद्म ऊरू पद्माक्षी पद्मसंभवॆ ।
    त्वं मां भजस्व पद्माक्षी यॆन सौख्यं लभाम्यहम्‌ ॥ २ ॥

    padmaanane padma ooro padmaakshI padmasambhave |
    tvam maam bhajasva padmaakshi yena soukhyam labhaamyaham || 2 ||

    Oh Lakshmi, as you are seated on Padmasana, with lotus-like thighs, with lotus-like eyes, born in a lotus, bless me with your grace, so that I may attain happiness and well-being.

  • अश्वदायी च गॊदायी धनदायी महाधनॆ ।
    धनं मॆ जुषतां दॆवि सर्वकामा"ंश्च दॆहि मॆ ॥ ३ ॥

    ashvadaayi cha godaayi dhanadaayi mahaadhane |
    dhanam me jushataam devi sarvakaamaanshcha dehi me || 3 ||

    O Goddess, bestow wealth upon me. You are the giver of horses, cows, and wealth. Therefore, Grant me abundance and fulfill all my desires

  • पद्माननॆ पद्मविपद्मपत्रॆ पद्मप्रियॆ पद्मदलायताक्षि ।
    विश्वप्रियॆ विष्णुमनॊऽनुकूलॆ त्वत्पादपद्मं मयि संनिधत्स्व ॥ ४ ॥

    padmaanane padmavipadmapatre padmapriye padmadalaayataakshi |
    vishvapriye vishnumanonukoole tvatpaadapadmam mayi samnidhatsva || 4 ||

    O Goddess, lotus-faced, seated on a lotus, beloved of devotees like a lotus, with eyes like lotus petals, beloved of the universe, abiding in the hearts of devotees, beloved of Vishnu, place your lotus feet on me

  • पुत्र पौत्र धनं धान्यं हस्त्यश्वादिगवॆ रथम्‌ ।
    प्रजानां भवसि माता आयुष्मंतं करॊतुमाम्‌ ॥ ५ ॥

    putra poutra dhanam dhaanyam hastyashvaadigave ratham |
    prajaanaam bhavasi maataa aayushmantam karotumaam || 5 ||

    O Mother, bless me with sons, grandsons, wealth, grains, elephants, horses, and cows, and grant a long life to me

  • धनमग्निर्धनं वायुर्धनं सूर्यॊ धनं वसुः ।
    धनमिंद्रॊ बृहस्पतिर्वरुणं धनमश्नुतॆ ॥ ६ ॥

    dhanamagnirdhanam vaayurdhanam suryo dhanam vasuH |
    dhanamindro bruhaspatirvarunam dhanamashnute || 6 ||

    O Mother, you are the Agni, you are the Vayu, you are the Sun, you are the Vasus. You are also Indra, Brihaspati and Varuna. You are everything in this universe.

  • वैनतॆय सॊमं पिब सॊमं पिबतु वृत्रहा ।
    सॊमं धनस्य सॊमिनॊ मह्यं ददातु सॊमिनी" ॥ ७ ॥

    vainateya somam piba somam pibatu vrutrahaa |
    somam dhanasya somino mahyam dadaatu somini || 7 ||

    Vinata's son (Garuda), Indra who killed Vritrasura, and other devas became immortal after drinking Somarasa born of you. O mother, kindly grant me such a soma rasa that you have.

  • न क्रॊधॊ न च मात्सर्यं न लॊभॊ नाशुभामतिः ।
    भवंति कृतपुण्यानां भक्तानां श्रीसू"क्तं जपॆत्सदा ॥ ८ ॥

    na krodho na cha maatsaryam na lobho naashubhaamatiH |
    bhavanti krutapunyaanaam bhaktaanaam shrIsuktam japetsadaa || 8 ||

    A devotee who always recite Sri Sukta does not get any anger, jealousy, greed, or bad thoughts. Because they become recipients of accumulated merit

  • वर्षंतु तॆ विभावरिदिवॊ अभ्रस्य विद्युतः ।
    रॊहंतु सर्वबीजान्यव ब्रह्मद्विषॊ" जहि ॥ ९ ॥

    varshantu te vibhaavaridivo abhrasya vidyutaH |
    rohantu sarvabIjaanyava brahmadvisho jahi || 9 ||

    O Lakshmi, by your grace the clouds in space burst, lightnings light up the sky, rain falls, and from it all seeds germinate and become plants. Likewise, destroy the bad qualities in me and make me good.

  • या सा पद्मासनस्था विपुलकटितटी पद्मपत्रायताक्षी,
    गंभीरावर्तनाभिस्तनभरनमिता शुभ्रवस्त्रॊत्तरीया ।
    लक्ष्मीर्दिव्यैर्गजॆंद्रैर्मणिगणखचितैः स्थापिता हॆमकुंभैः,
    नित्यं सा पद्महस्ता मम वसतु गृहॆ सर्वमांगल्ययुक्ता ॥ १० ॥

    yaa saa padmaasanasthaa vipulakatitati padmapatraayataakshi,
    gambheeraavartanaabhistanabharanamitaa shubhravastrottareeyaa |
    lakshmirdivyairgajendrairmaniganakhacitaiH sthaapitaa hemakumbhaiH,
    nityam saa padmahastaa mama vasatu gruhe sarvamaangalyayuktaa || 10 ||

    May that goddess who sits on a lotus seat, broad-waisted, eyes wide like lotus petals, navel like a deep swirl, adorned with beautiful jewels, clad in pure white garments, surrounded by divine elephants and bedecked with jewels and gems, holding lotuses in her hands, always dwell in my house and bring wealth to all.

  • लक्ष्मीं क्षीरसमुद्रराजतनयां श्रीरंगधामॆश्वरीं
    दासीभूतसमस्त दॆववनितां लॊकैक दीपांकुराम्‌ ।
    श्रीमन्मंदकटाक्षलब्धविभव ब्रह्मॆंद्र गंगाधरां
    त्वां त्रैलॊक्यकुटुंबिनीं सरसिजां वंदॆ मुकुंदप्रियाम्‌ ॥ ११ ॥

    lakshmim ksheerasamudraraajatanayaam shrIrangadhaameshvarim
    daasibhutasamasta devavanitaam lokaika deepaankuraam |
    shrimanmandakataakshalabdhavibhava brahmendra gangaadharaam
    tvaam trailokyakutumbinim sarasijaam vande mukundapriyaam || 11 ||

    I offer my obeisances to Goddess Lakshmi, who is the daughter of the ocean king, who resides in the ocean of milk, who is served by all the divine servants, who appears as a shining lamp in the world, who is adorned with abundance, who is graced by Brahma, Indra and Shiva with her glance, who is the universal mother of the three worlds and the beloved of Mukunda.

  • सिद्धलक्ष्मीर्मॊक्षलक्ष्मीर्जयलक्ष्मीः सरस्वती ।
    श्री लक्ष्मीर्वरलक्ष्मीश्च प्रसन्ना भव सर्वदा ॥ १२ ॥

    siddhalakshmirmokshalakshmirjayalakshmiH sarasvati |
    shri lakshmirvaralakshmishcha prasannaa bhava sarvadaa || 12 ||

    O Mahalakshmi, as Lakshmi the causer of Siddhi (Siddha Lakshmi), as Lakshmi the giver of salvation (Moksha Lakshmi), as Lakshmi as the giver of victory (Jaya Lakshmi), as Lakshmi as the giver of knowledge (Saraswati), as Lakshmi as the giver of riches (Sri Lakshmi), and as Lakshmi as the giver of boons (Varalakshmi), you always bless me.

  • वरांकुशौ पाशमभीतिमुद्रां करैर्वहंतीं कमलासनस्थाम्‌ ।
    बालार्ककॊटिप्रतिभां त्रिणॆत्रां भजॆऽहमाद्यां जगदीश्वरीं ताम्‌ ॥ १३ ॥

    varaankushou paashamabheetimudraam karairvahantim kamalaasanasthaam |
    baalaarkakotipratibhaam trinetraam bhajehamaadyaam jagadeeshvarim taam || 13 ||

    I worship the Supreme Goddess, who holds the ankusha and noose, who displays the abhaya and varada mudras with her hands, seated on a lotus, with the radiance of a billion rising suns, the one with three eyes, the original deity of the universe and I adore her

  • सर्वमंगलमांगल्यॆ शिवॆ सर्वार्थसाधिकॆ ।
    शरण्यॆ त्र्यंबकॆ दॆवि नारायणि नमॊऽस्तुतॆ ॥ १४ ॥

    sarvamangalamaangalye shive sarvaarthasaadhike |
    sharanye tryambake devi naaraayani namostute || 14 ||

    O Narayani (Lakshmi), salutations to you. You are the auspicious of all, the fulfiller of all desires. You are the refuge of all, You are the protector of all. I bow down to you.

  • सरसिजनिलयॆ सरॊजहस्तॆ धवलतरां शुकगंधमा"ल्य शॊभॆ ।
    भगवति हरिवल्लभॆ मनॊज्ञॆ त्रिभुवनभूतिकरि प्रसीद मह्यम्‌ ॥ १५ ॥

    sarasijanilaye sarojahaste dhavalataraam shukagandhamaalya shobhe |
    bhagavati harivallabhe manojne tribhuvanabhootikari praseeda mahyam || 15 ||

    Salutations to you, O Goddess, sitting on a lotus flower, holding a lotus in your hand, wearing clean clothes and wearing a garland of sandalwood. O Haripriya, you who are revered and giver of wealth to the three worlds, show me your grace.

  • विष्णुपत्नीं क्षमां दॆवीं माधवीं माधवप्रियाम्‌ ।
    विष्णॊः प्रियसखीं दॆवीं नमाम्यच्युतवल्लभाम्‌ ॥ १६ ॥

    vishnupatneem kshamaam devim maadhavim maadhavapriyaam |
    vishnoh priyasakhim devim namaamyacyutavallabhaam || 16 ||

    Salutations to the goddess who is the wife of Vishnu, who is the form of forgiveness, who is like spring. Also my obeisances to the Immortal Goddess and most beloved friend.

  • महालक्ष्मै च विद्महॆ विष्णुपत्न्यै च धीमहि ।
    तन्नॊ लक्ष्मीः प्रचॊदया"त्‌ ॥ १७ ॥

    mahaalakshmai cha vidmahe vishnupatnyai cha dheemahi |
    tanno lakshmiH prachodayaat || 17 ||

    I meditate upon the great goddess Maha Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. May the radiant goddess Lakshmi inspire and guide us.

  • श्रीर्वर्चस्यमायुष्यमारॊ"ग्यमाविधात्पवमानं महीयतॆ" ।
    धनं धान्यं पशुं बहुपुत्रलाभं शतसंवथ्सरं दीर्घमायुः ॥ १८ ॥

    shrirvarchasyamaayushyamaarogyamaavidhaatpavamaanam maheeyate |
    dhanam dhaanyam pashum bahuputralaabham shatasamvathsaram deerghamaayuH || 18 ||

    wealth, brilliance, long life, health, progeny, abundance of grains, cattle, and hundred years of longevity; May Lakshmi grant us all these.

  • ऋणरॊगादि दारिद्र्य पापक्षुदपमृत्यवः ।
    भय शॊकमनस्तापा नश्यंतु मम सर्वदा ॥ १९ ॥

    runarogaadi daaridrya paapakshudapamrutyavaH |
    bhaya shokamanastaapaa nashyantu mama sarvadaa || 19 ||

    May poverty, diseases, afflictions, sins, hunger, death, fear, grief, and mental distress always be destroyed for me

  • श्रियॆ जातः श्रिय आनिरियाय श्रियं वयॊ" जरितृभ्यॊ" दधाति ।
    श्रियं वसा"ना अमृतत्वमा"यन्‌ भव"ंति सत्या समिथा मितद्रौ" ।
    श्रिय ऎवैनं तच्छ्रियमा"दधाति ।
    संततमृचा वषट्कृत्यं संतत्यै" संधीयतॆ प्रजया पशुभिर्य ऎ"वं वॆद ॥

    shriye jaataH shriya aaniriyaaya shriyam vayo jaritrubhyo dadhaati |
    shriyam vasaanaa amrutatvamaayan bhavanti satyaa samithaa mitadrou |
    shriya evainam tachriyamaadadhaati |
    santatamruchaa vashatkrutyam santatyai sandheeyate prajayaa pashubhirya evam veda ||

    May good be born, may it come to us, and may it give us prosperity, vitality, and long life. Clothed with truth, friendship, and compassion bestow upon us immortality. Only by divine grace can we attain prosperity.

    तन्नॊ लक्ष्मीः प्रचॊदया"त्‌ ॥
