Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Udupi on 28 November 2025 marks one of the most significant religious and cultural events of the year for coastal Karnataka. The ancient Sri Krishna Matha — founded in the 13th century by Jagadguru Sri Madhvacharya — will host the Prime Minister for a series of spiritual, heritage, and cultural ceremonies. With the participation of nearly one lakh devotees reciting the Bhagavad Gita, the visit places Udupi at the centre of national attention.
1. Purpose of the Visit
The Prime Minister’s Udupi tour revolves around three primary themes:
a) Participation in the Laksha Kantha Gita Parayana
A mass recital of the Bhagavad Gita, featuring nearly 100,000 participants including students, monks, scholars, and devotees, will be one of the central highlights of the event. This collective chanting is part of the larger “Geeta Amrita Mahotsava” hosted in Udupi, celebrating the timeless wisdom of the Gita. Prime Minister Modi is expected to join the programme ceremonially by reciting select verses along with the devotees, adding significance to the historic gathering.
b) Dedication of Major Temple Restorations & Gold Installations
PM Modi will inaugurate or dedicate several key religious structures, including:
- Suvarna Teertha Mantapa — a newly gold-plated ceremonial pavilion inside the Udupi Sri Krishna Matha. Built to enhance the sanctity of temple rituals, it adds a divine glow and elevates the spiritual atmosphere of the premises. PM Modi’s dedication of the mantapa highlights the temple’s ongoing efforts to preserve and beautify its sacred heritage.
- Kanaka Kavacha at Kanakana Kindi — Kanakana Kindi is the sacred window where Lord Krishna blessed Kanakadasa by granting him darshan through this small window when he was denied entry into the temple. The newly added Kanaka Kavacha, a gold covering for this window, honours that historic moment and enhances its sanctity.
c) Spiritual & Cultural Engagement
The Prime Minister will offer prayers at the Krishna Matha and interact with heads of the Ashta Mathas. Also, the visit celebrates India’s spiritual heritage and reinforces the cultural identity associated with the Madhva tradition.
