Vipareeta Raja Yoga

Vipareeta Raja Yoga in Vedic Astrology

Vipareeta means ‘reversal’ or sometimes it is called ‘excess’. As the name itself suggests, it is a kind of Rajayoga. In other Raja yogas, normally Kendra and Trikona houses play an important part. But in Vipareet raja yoga, dusthana or evil lords play a vital role. In Vedic astrology, dusthana houses are sixth, eighth, and twelfth houses and its lords are called dusthana lords. They will become functional malefic and generally give unfavorable results to the native depending on the position in a horoscope. But sometimes these planets also behave very well.

How Vipareeta Raja Yoga is Formed?

Scriptures say that, when the lords of 6th, 8th, and 12th houses occupy any other evil houses or conjunction with other evil lords, then Vipareeta Raja Yoga occurs. The logic behind Vipareet raja yoga is simple. The intention of these houses and their lords is to give negative results. When the lord of an evil house sits in another evil house, two things happen. One, it negates the characteristic of that bhava or house, and second, by sitting in a negative house it loses its own negativity. So these planets are unlikely to give a bad effect on the native. So these planets with the help of benefic planets tend to give very positive results.

Vipareeta raja yoga is like a Rajayoga which gives all the fame and prosperity to the native, but with certain conditions. Normally it is said that Vipareet raj yoga confers the native all the blessings with the downfall of others or he will get everything with the help of others or with a lot of struggles. Initially, the native will suffer in the matters related to respective bhava. That is the reason we will see this yoga more with people associated with politics, sports, businessmen, those involved in the competition, etc. Definitely it is not good for a spiritual native. In Vipareeta rajayoga, the results may not come very easily unlike other Raja yogas, The native has to put intense effort to achieve something, more so initially.

There are some contradictions with regard to the results of this yoga in scriptures. Sage Parasara in Brihat Parasara hora sastra is of the view that the lords of the inauspicious houses sitting in other evil houses may not give favorable results. Rather it gives mixed results to the native. I think it is because Parasara is the highest order of spiritual Guru. He will see everything in terms of the spiritual prism. However, other scriptures like Phaladeepika and Uttara Kalamrita are very positive on Vipareeta rajayoga. They advocate that when a dusthana lord is sitting in another house, that will reduce the negative effect.

Mainly there are three different kinds of Vipareeta Raja Yogas in astrology. They are Harsha, Sarala, and Vimala Yoga.

Harsha Yoga - (Harsha Vipareeta Rajayoga)

When 6th, 8th or 12th house lords occupy 6th house, Harsha Vipareeta raja yoga occurs. Some authors are of the opinion that the 6th house lord should occupy only the 6th house. The native, born with this yoga is endowed with happiness and health. He will gain from his enemies, will be wealthy, enjoys name and fame. He will be very influential and very competitive in nature. But the native will have enmity with closed ones, will spend on unnecessary things, hostile to learned people, afflicted with diseases in childhood, there will be a danger with snakes.

According to Mantreswara in Phaladeepika,

Harsha yoga native will be blessed with happiness, good fortune, and have a strong constitution. He will conquer his enemies and will not do sinful deeds. He will become a friend of illustrious, wealthy, splendorous, famous, and will have many friends.

Sarala Yoga - (Sarala Vipareeta Rajayoga)

When 6th, 8th or 12th house lords occupy 8th house, Sarala Vipareeta rajayoga occurs. The native with Sarala yoga will be long-lived, happy, wealthy, there will be sudden gains, will earn wealth, property, will get power and authority, interested in occult sciences, will have hidden wealth. Also, the native will be secretive, cannot be trusted, inimical to closed people, will have affairs with other women.

According to Phaladeepika,

दीर्घायुष्मान् दृढमतिरभय: श्रीमान्विद्यासुतधनसहित: ।

सिद्धारम्भॊ जितरिपुरमलॊ विख्याताख्य: प्रभवति सरलॆ ॥

Sarala yoga enables the natives to be long-lived, resolute, fearless, prosperous, learned, blessed with children, and wealth. The native with this yoga will achieve success in all his ventures, will be victorious over his enemies, and will be a great celebrity.

Vimala Yoga - (Vimala Vipareeta Rajayoga)

When 6th, 8th, or 12th house lords occupy 12th house, Vimala Vipareeta rajayoga occurs. The native with Vimala yoga will be good at accumulating wealth, good in financial management, spend less, enjoy the pleasures, he also charitable in nature, will be famous in the circle. On the other side, he will also spend on hospitalization, hostile to learned people, will get into unnecessary arguments, short-lived.
